LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
The University of Cincinnati track and field team got wins from Darnell Gilbert (400 meters) and Mackenzie Fields (pole vault) Friday in the Cardinal Twilight at the Cardinal Park Track and Soccer Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
The NCAA Preliminary Round at the University of North Florida is just under two weeks away and Friday's event served as a last-chance meet for athletes to move up the NCAA Division I descending order lists.
Gilbert won the 400 meters in a season-best time of 47.52 and also ran 21.48 to finish fifth in the 200 meters.
Fields won the women's pole vault after clearing 3.90m (12-09.50) and beating teammate Michelle Eby and Eastern Illinois' Abigail Schmitz in a jump off. Eby, the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Champion took second and Schmitz was third. Emily Clay placed sixth with her vault of 3.65m (11-11.75).
In other action, Alyssa Edley was fifth in the women's 100 meters, clocking 13.30. Kyle Donthnier was 16th with Michael Nwankwo on his heels in 17th in the men's 100, clocking times of 11.72 and 11.85, respectively.
Evan Baum came home 12th in the men's 800 meters after his run of 1:56.74. Tyler Ross was 21st after clocking 2:04.52.
Baum also placed ninth in the 1,500 meters, crossing the line in 3:53.44. Rob Flannigan was 16th with a time of 4:11.56.
Jeff Griffiths ran 14:35.79 to place fourth in section one of the men's 5,000-meter race. Jacob Franklin clocked 15:57.11 in section two of the 5,000 meters, earning a sixth-place finish.

(eighth) all made the finals in the men's 110 hurdles, finishing with times of 14.35, 14.51 and 14.79, respectively. Cain's time was a season best and Moore also equaled his season-best effort with a 14.16 on his qualifying run.
Kaitlyn Good was fourth in the 400 hurdles with her season-best time of 1:00.54.
Josh Dangel took fourth in the men's pole vault. He cleared 4.96m (16-03.25). Kyle Kubera came home in 13th, getting over the bar at 4.66m (15-03.50).
Tariq Sanders was fourth in the men's long jump after leaping 6.88m (22-07.00). Donthnier was ninth with a best effort of 6.56m (21-06.25).
Nwankwo was third in the triple jump, clearing 14.46m (47-05.25). Sanders was sixth (13.45m/44-01.50) and Donthnier was seventh (13.16m/43-02.25).
Mekayla Breland took 10th place in the shot put with her heave of 13.43m (44-00.75). Chris Littleton was ninth in the men's event with a toss of 16.89m (55-05.00).
Mary Bridges placed sixth in the discus after a toss of 48.03m (157-07). Jessica Molyet was 11th (45.69m/149-11) and Frida Akerstrom placed 14th (41.09m/134-10). Littleton took seventh in the men's event with a best effort of 52.43m (172-00). Jake Haseman was in 11th after tossing 47.49m (155-10). Josh Ballenger was 16th (41.02m/134-07) and Josh Province placed 18th (40.70m/133-06).
Akerstrom came home 13th in the hammer throw after throwing 48.89m (160-05). Breland finished 17th (44.89m/147-03), Molyet was 18th (42.71m/140-01) and Bridges was 19th (39.54m/129-09). Haseman threw 56.13m (184-02) in the men's event to take home seventh place. Province finished 14th with a toss of 45.19m (148-03).
Emelie Larsson took second in the women's javelin. She had a best effort of 45.52m (149-04). Ballenger was seventh in the men's event, clearing 53.94m (177-00) with his best effort.
UC's women's 4x400 relay squad of Jalisa Jarrett, Kathy Klump, Shanay Portis and Aricka Rhodes will be in action Saturday at the Virgina Challenge in Charlottsville, Va. The quartet looks to improve upon its current time of 3:40.57 which is 53rd in the most recent NCAA East listing.
UC assistant Mary Wineberg will also be in action, taking part in the 400 meters as she continues her prep for a potential return to the U.S. squad for 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, England.
The Bearcats will return to Cincinnati and await the NCAA's release of the qualifying lists containing the Top-48 declarations for the NCAA East Preliminary Round Meet. The meet is set to run May 24-26 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
